Ocean Quigley Producer Diary: SimCity Overview (coming March 5, 2013)

Lead Creative Director Ocean Quigley shows an exclusive look at SimCity! Ocean is a SimCity veteran with over 17 years experience working on SimCity titles including SimCity 4, SimCity 3000, SimCopter, even working on the art team for SimCity 2000! This new SimCity has the classic feel of past SimCity titles. As Mayor, you get to create cities and build simulated worlds! With new design tools, find out what happens when Ocean builds a fully functional city shaped like a guitar! See how Ocean uses data layers to plop a Police station and fight crime, preventing those pesky criminal Sims from robbing his banks! Cities are truly connected, so when Ocean has access power, he can choose to sell it to neighboring cities. In the new SimCity you can create your dream city, play with the simulation or complete with your friends on the leaderboards!

Permalink Submitted by jaijasty22 on Dec 01, 2012

A few months ago it was in Pre-Alpha but now it's Alpha for about 3-4 months. So you may expect Beta later this month or January. But now there is about 4 until it releases. So looking at the time till release, I suggest beta should be out in about a month.

A lot of these features seem

Permalink Submitted by Dadybigbuks on Nov 28, 2012

A lot of these features seem really neat, but I am holding back a little because I am still jaded from Spore. I am not sure how I feel about the roads determining building density, or what I thought I saw in this video about improving happiness with city beautification. Also it kinda scares me that they suggest tearing down your city with disasters and starting over, because that tells me eventually you just get board with your city. I liked the previous games because no matter what you did there was always something to improve on and work towards. I guess I will have to wait for either the beta or the release to put my worries at ease.

I think you might be reading

Permalink Submitted by Fizwalker on Nov 30, 2012

I think you might be reading too much into it....At least with the disasters. The original game had them, I know SimCity 4 has them and I believe 2000 and 3000 did too, tho I don't remember off hand. If I have any worries about it, they would be if this iteration is going to be like Societies...

Spore was cool - for a couple

Permalink Submitted by ggiles17 on Jan 03, 2013

Spore was cool - for a couple of days until I did everything there was to do. Then I just got bored of it and didn't go back to it. So I totally relate to your concerns. SimSociety was also a massive, massive, massive letdown, because it dumbed down everything that made SimCity awesome.

Honestly, I am concerned about the small sizes of these cities, and how on the surface this new SimCity version is following the unfortunate CitiesXL model of "looks pretty, but is incredibly boring". I'll wait to see how it actually is after release, but yeah, I'm anxious - there hasn't been a SOLID city sim game since SimCity 4.

This new version visually looks beautiful, and I like the layers of information and network system, but a pretty game does not a great game make - great gameplay and endless replayability make a great game... this is why I'm really anxious about this new release. Fingers crossed.

I hope there is army bases in

Permalink Submitted by SimCityFan101 on Nov 29, 2012

I hope there is army bases in the game like on the classics and sim city 4 if maxis adds army bases I hope there will be a navy ship yard that will be built by the ocean and the player can see the ship going to other maps and the 101 airborne base that is in Kentucky the air base name is fort Kentucky and the players also see the soldiers jumping to other places in the game and the planes landing to other airfields and I hope there will be the national guard base a marine base etc.

Why are the cities

Permalink Submitted by Avalco on Nov 29, 2012

Why are the cities quarantined to such a small space... high rises then empty space, then more high rises? Is there any discussion from the devs about making them bigger? What about unlocking more land for your city. What about farm lands?

I agree, that´s totally weird

Permalink Submitted by LucianoAD on Nov 29, 2012

I agree, that´s totally weird to see, it´s not like a real city and i think that should be possible to put the cities side by side so that it can form a metropolis with cities atached to its neighbour city letting the player chose if he or she wants to unite cities to form a metropolis or build a city away from the other....

2km is 1.24274 miles ... in

Permalink Submitted by Avalco on Dec 01, 2012

2km is 1.24274 miles ... in ALL of america with its many cities, I cannot think of a single city that fits into 1.23 miles of space and had that many skyscrapers. Fun fact, I lived on an island once that was a mile wide... there was 1 main road, not one skyscraper to be found. I can only speculate they are doing this because of the limitations in the Glass Box engine. I would (as a dev... and I AM a software dev) take the average city size at the very least if I really wanted to simulate a city.
