Permalink Submitted by mayorkarkar on Oct 23, 2012

Why no subways?! Traffic is a key aspect of SimCity 4 and the game look way more complex now, why would you take away subways? I was not expecting cuts on options, I was expecting something like a "promote the use of bycicles" city ordinance, and lots of options to create jobs, reduce commute time, etc. I know that it's maybe too late do introduce subways, but it sounds like a mistake. I guess there'll be an expansion pack...

No need to panic.
I strongly believe they'll add it in as a DLC.

We're talking about EA here. They've used this trick before with some fps games, such as Battlefield 3.

Stay Awesome, hope I helped you with your question.

There are streetcars with, I believe, fully customisable routing. The same is true of buses so, while there's no underground (or subway as some call it) there are many other choises for public transport from what I've seen. Hope this helps.

Permalink Submitted by mayorkarkar on Nov 06, 2012

Everyone knows this. But, if you listen to what he says... He SAYS there'll be no subways. Not "still no subways" or "you can't see the subways yet". He says "...we're not gonna have subways, but we'll have tons of transportation options...". So, I know it's a work in progress, and I don't think that DLC is the best solution. Don't get me wrong, the game looks great, I've played all the previous Sim Cities, and I'm definetily goin' to give a try. Subway is not only something that you have in real cities, you have in Sim City 4! So, I think is a bad move to make without subway. Just that.

Chicago sort of has a subway. Parts of it are elevated, parts of it are ground level, and other parts are below ground. It's called the L, and it's basically Chicago's version of the New York City Subway.

But yeah I don't think SimCity is going to be any less fun without subways though. It looks awesome

It seemed too perfect to be true. A city without subways and rails is not a city. It should be the same great mistake of the XL series.
A complete transport system is a must and without it I'm not going to purchase it.

Not every city in the world

Permalink Submitted by Unreal2004GF on Nov 09, 2012

Not every city in the world has trains, subways, trams or what not, where I grew up there were no such things, where I live now there are only trains connecting the cities and trams IN the main town but not out in the smaller towns but why use them, too expensive. My only gripe is the always on aspect of Origin AND the fact that my "broadband" is right at minimums for upload speed at best, wish they had an option like Steam for "Offline Mode".

Maybe they want to keep all the action on a single layer to streamline the game a little. While I was happy with the removal of the excessive need for water pipes or electricity pylons, I have to say I'm a bit upset that subways have been removed alltogether!

Permalink Submitted by hippytree13 on Oct 24, 2012

hey you guys I'm major Sim City player i have played all of the Sim City's from when i was about 8 years old growing up in miami. I'm 23 and living in New York now and still install some of the old games when i have time. this pass year i had a trip to Tokyo Japan for the first time and i remembered looking up a Japanese Sim City for the N64 and i made sure to get it in Akihabara Tokyo when i was there. ether way i have spent a lot of time enjoying the game and designing in it.

i wanted to ask why are you guys developing the game without allowing terraform>? anyone who builds a city knows that to fill in lakes and make rivers is vary important to a economy or a city a gives it that personal touch. like Dubai and the palm islands or fort lauderdale with it's cannals for tourist reasons and England with it's canals or Tokyo and Hong Kong with it's airports for it's economic reasons. just wanted to say its a vary creative and personal touch you guys are removing. and i know i'll personally miss making my city's look like places i have been to in the world or using my terrain brush to push my economy. when Sim City 4 came out i spent a week making my region look like my home city of miami. and that then help personally connect me to my city. i was no longer building a city in a game, i was mayor of the city that i was living in. making things come that i felt should be made to my city. but this all evolved out of me just transforming.

PS. if there is a way to combine Sim city with the Sims 3 where Sims can visit and work in this city's or vacation would be wonderful. i know it's a lot to ask but i know the community would love the idea. where waiting to play with are Sims in a real online community not like war craft but something new.

I dont think we should have terraforming. I think it is a cheap way to make citys easy. I think there should be more options on construction. Make "terraforming" more of a long term thing, Like say a iron range build a construction crew that will mine the hill down. Rather then just click the cut this tree and lower this land. I like the idea of really having to work with what you have in front of you to make a city work.

No Subways, No frieght trains with trucks going in and out of em, No overpasses or underpasses or onramps or offramps or raised hyways. No Raised Rail at all, I hope Parks are still there, No Terraforming. WTF. SimCity was always about the details, was it not? Each one put out was better than the previous version. Why did you take away alot of the details that we love and make this series the memorable one. After all the sites that have dedicated thier time and money and effort would you let them down? Why are you devs acting so irresponsible with your core fans? If thier is the DLC that makes up for the details be honest and fess up. Please put back the details that your predessesors worked so hard to implement in the previous versions.

YES! EA I agree with Hippytree13. Why on earth would EA games pull out one of the core features that this game was originally modeled around? I hate to say it but this promises to be a flop. Lets hype it up, get everyone's expectations up, then yank the rug out from underneath us and say ha ha suckers you just bought a disappointment, or is your big plan to release an equally disappointing expansion pack to this game. I'm sorry but I will stick with simcity 4 and it's largely supported user based addons that don't cost a dime and add's to the purpose of the game.

The transit system looks like

Permalink Submitted by simcyclist on Oct 25, 2012

The transit system looks like a very promising start, but I'd love to see a few more options in the future: Bicycles seems like a no-brainer, given how effective they are at reducing congestion in tight urban spaces. Ditto for raised rail or subways, which make better use of limited space. It would be encouraging to see Simcity show how real cities could be improved, rather than just mimic poor design in real life.

Man, where'd the agriculture

I always hated agriculture in

Permalink Submitted by lgm118 on Oct 26, 2012

I always hated agriculture in SC4. About the only thing my farms were ever doing was setting up my eventual grid for when I inevitably bulldozed them. Not to mention that in SC4, agriculture demand was inversely proportional to city size (the bigger your city, the fewer farms).

Cities XL made farms actually relevant to gameplay by adding in the food mechanic, but eventually you always end up with the problem that farms use up too much space, have too many demands when it comes to land use around them (in a 2km by 2km city, you simply don't have the space for industry AND agriculture), and really only do one thing: provide food.

If you really want to, you can pretend that food gets shipped in from out of the regions.

Permalink Submitted by lgm118 on Oct 26, 2012

The downside of CitiesXL of course being that the unfixed bugs make it nearly unplayable. That, and a horribly bad zoning system that makes building up tedious, slow, and painfully annoying (no ability to just rezone existing stuff to higher density). Oh, and don't forget that half the "special" buildings are basically advertising tie-ins so that Focus Home Interactive can make a quick buck off of that (see: carrefour.com).

In other words, right now the only good city builder is a heavily modded SC4.

Permalink Submitted by rippach on Oct 26, 2012

Ok, so after I heard there's going to be a new Sim City a few months back I was so excited for it and couldn't wait until February. I've been playing Sim City ever since I was little. And what I saw looked really good and I thought I would be able to build a really nice city. Especially that you can customize the buildings looked really great. But after watching this video I'm already disappointed. No subway? Is there a reason for that? Guess not, but ok, I can live with that. But what I cannot understand is the 2km by 2km area. Why would you do that? Guys, we're in 2012! What's also hard for me to understand is why Maxis wouldn't change it. Because I found so many comments on the web and it seems I'm not the only one who's disappointed by that point.
So again, a great idea is ruined, but it sparked my interest in these kind of games again. So I'm getting Cities XL now instead. I think Sim City has a greater potential than Cities XL, but at least I can build a city there, not just a town.

No subways is going to suck,

Permalink Submitted by lgm118 on Oct 26, 2012

No subways is going to suck, and the limited size of individual cities is going to suck. That said, I have no doubt things will end up changing. Even in the video they point out that people will walk "400 meters" to catch a bus as opposed to driving. That means that in a 2km by 2km city, you would never need more than 5 or 6 bus stops to cover everyone. I'm betting that the beta is going to show the inadequacy of the 2km by 2km city and lead to an adjustment there (I doubt that increasing the size of cities would require too much work, especially when we're talking about a company with EA's resources).

As for subways, transportation add-ins are inevitable. Remember that the big add-in for SC4 was the Rush Hour pack, which among other things added Avenues, one-way roads, monorail (which most of us downloaded the Bullet Train Mod or the HSR mod for anyways) and Elevated rail. In other words, whatever transportation options aren't in the initial release will make their way into expansions.

Permalink Submitted by logans_run_dude on Oct 27, 2012

I haven't been reading every single post, but to the best of my knowledge this is the first time we've seen a clear, unambiguous message that solo play within a region will definitely be one of our choices. THANK YOU for that!! That one was the single most serious potential dealbreaker for me (and I suspect many others). Truthfully, I'm still not keen on 2km x 2km plots (let's call it "SimMultipleVillages" maybe?), and I absolutely RESENT the Origin requirement (I resent having to have an Origin account just to write this comment... WTF????), but I will admit I will probably still give this game a try. Like so many others, I run hot and cold on this entire thing... (speaking to the devs here...) you've got some brilliant ideas, beautiful design, and apparently solid core functionality, and you've wrapped all that up in some jaw-droppingly terrible ignore-your-customer-base decisions. I admit that "we" (potential customers) are not all in one place (ie- some ppl say subways are the life-giving breath of the eternal maker, I couldn't care less about subways), but I haven't heard a single sole in the SimCity universe say they are happy about the online requirement. Oh well, all aside, I still say "thanks" for the solo option... I now pledge to "rent" the right to "borrow" the game when it comes out on Evil Origin.

Permalink Submitted by ThatCrazyYankee on Oct 27, 2012

If the subways in SC4 were like the ones in SC3 then I won't shed a tear for them being omitted. To me they were a lot of time, effort, and Simoleons for something that I rarely saw. However I would suggest adding new transportation ideas like taxis or helipads. Something we have not witnessed in previous titles. As for the multiplayer idea, sure I'm skeptical like many others but I'll give it a try. Who knows, maybe we'll all enjoy it.
