Here’s a quick update on the problems we were experiencing with SimCity – and a little something extra for people who bought the game.

The server issues which began at launch have improved significantly as we added more capacity. But some people are still experiencing response and stability problems that we’re working fast to address.

So what went wrong? The short answer is: a lot more people logged on than we expected. More people played and played in ways we never saw in the beta.

OK, we agree, that was dumb, but we are committed to fixing it. In the last 48 hours we increased server capacity by 120 percent. It’s working – the number of people who have gotten in and built cities has improved dramatically. The number of disrupted experiences has dropped by roughly 80 percent.

So we’re close to fixed, but not quite there. I’m hoping to post another update this weekend to let everyone know that the launch issues are behind us.

Something Special for Your Trouble

The good news is that SimCity is a solid hit in all major markets. The consensus among critics and players is that this is fundamentally a great game. But this SimCity is made to be played online, and if you can’t get a stable connection, you’re NOT having a good experience. So we’re not going to rest until we’ve fixed the remaining server issues.

And to get us back in your good graces, we’re going to offer you a free PC download game from the EA portfolio. On March 18, SimCity players who have activated their game will receive an email telling them how to redeem their free game.

I know that’s a little contrived – kind of like buying a present for a friend after you did something crummy. But we feel bad about what happened. We’re hoping you won’t stay mad and that we’ll be friends again when SimCity is running at 100 percent.

SimCity is a GREAT game and the people who made it are incredibly proud. Hang in there – we’ll be providing more updates throughout the weekend.

Thank you Lucy :)

I don't want another EA game. Please give me money so I can buy games from Steam, where translation from english to portuguese actually makes sense so I dont have to read some new kind of hebrew-portuguese to painfully go through an unclear purchasing process.

Thx.

Why don't you just use English like normal people?

Not everyone in the world speaks English......(facepalm)

seems like he can type in English well enough tho

LOL, He seems to type it better than 95% of youtube users.

Thank you very much for a very useful article. Best of luck always to the author.

So, think like this:

If you are American/English, playing a game originally made in russian, with a poor english translation althought you can understand russian pretty well withouth mastering it.
Would you rather play in a poor english translation or in russian?

And stop being a douche.

:) My thoughts, too, Wooddie! LOL

Thanks for taking this opportunity to discuss this, I feel fervently about this and I like learning about this subject. metalworking machinery

I'm incredibly grateful for this response from you, but I really don't think it is necessary to have to feel so bad for everything that happens. Sue I was upset like everyone else, but it was the only reason I'm upset. Some minor bugs that irk me, but you can only get to much info out of the brief beta you provided.

As for the free EA game, that's far too nice of a thing to offer. We weren't locked entirely out of the game and I feel it may be fueling the elitist deserving ego a lot of players have anymore. I simple extra DLC would have been nice, or just a fun addon of sorts.

I know this sounded more like a bash, but I as a mature gamer, feel sorry that you have to feel so bad.

Regards,

Maybe you have been able to play from the start, but that doesn't go for everyone.
I had the game on release date, and I couldn't play for 2 days. Not counting the tutorial which I could (barely) play the second day. Now, after two days of depression I can finally play, altho still with connection issues, but at least I can get in eventually and continue with my city.

But I agree, a free EA game is nice, but not entirely neccessary. A reward in the form of free DLC would be a better idea.
I'm looking forward to the British City Set, but I don't want to pay 10 bucks for it.

So, Origin...? ;)

Kind regards,
Paul

I agree, I would much rather have a free DLC for Sim City, then some game I have no interest in. Its a nice attempt, but something Sim City related would of been so much better.

You have to understand that a good chunk of people already paid for the DLC, maybe adding as an option, but not just the DLC..

Yeah. That would do me no good as I paid for all the DLC by preordering the top end package. I agree. I don't want a free game. I want some kind of special DLC. It would be nice, that everyone currently playing it, got a special landmark or building set that you could only get if you were effected by this stupidity. As of this minute, everyone who has paid for the game would be eligible.

And the business reality is the free game will most likely be something 12-24 months old, which people aren't too likely to buy now. Whereas people will still buy the DLC.

And that's fine. It's still a good gesture.

Maybe a DLC that gives more transportation options (In city Highways), Bigger cities, and other bits and pieces? :D

Who knows you might still be able too, it is technically an EA title

you can buy all 3 for 20 bucks I did. It was called deluxe upgrade in the store. :)

If you are "depressed" because you had to wait two more days to play your game, you've got issues far beyond what a free game will address. You should all stop whining and be grateful for the fact that EA put a significant amount of effort into what turns out to be a fantastic sequel to a GREAT franchise.

I agree, a DLC would be a nice gesture, but when ehy say a game from the EA portfolio do they mean any game?

When you have a game as popular as SimCity, you do not have "brief betas." You stress test the life out of it and figure out the majority of the basic issues like server stability. While I agree that a free game (it could just be some small $20 thing) is a bit much in terms of a make-up present, something should of been handed back to us as to show they understand they messed up largely. This game has been pulled from major sellers due to their server instability. It is a huge deal to have an online-only game be constantly down and constantly erase progress during the start.

Honestly, I spent hours trying to log in only to get the message that the servers went down, and right back up again. Repeatedly. Im sure they are appreciative of your lack of anger. But as for me. I think the game idea is great, or even DLC like you suggested. Either way I was getting a bit upset that I couldnt even play the game.

I still haven't even been able to get the game to open because it "can't connect to the EA servers." It has been 5 days and I still haven't been able to get any technical support. There is something fundamentally wrong with purchasing something, it not working at all, and not being able to get support.

How can you say EA giving us a free game enforces an elitist attitude. As a gamer we should be able to play the games we spend our money on. I understand that there will always be some problems with new releases and that's fine but what happened with Sim City is unacceptable and as gamers we should hold EA and another companies accountable. We are not elitists who think we deserve everything but we are consumers who should demand a quality product. A free game is a great gesture to show us that they understand they messed up and hopefully will be a reason to make sure something like this never happens again.

Ummm, you were lucky that you were able to play right away. Many of us, including me, were not even able to log in for even a second all week.

I agree. DLC or even possible The MAC version would be nice for those that purchased the PC version. This is technology people. Its not like they did not test the game, because they did. I was there during Beta Testing and the game ran smooth. Plain in simple which was bad on their side not to think SIMCITY would not be as big as it would be. I have seen plenty of companies put out really buggy software and just run. MAXIS/EA is fixing the problem and admitting to this problem. When all is all. We gonna have tons of mayors to play with. Stop griping and grabs some patience. Thanks MAXIS/EA for a wonderful game, been enjoying your sim games since the 80s. I will admit I was disappointed when it was not offered as a PC/MAC like I am used to with your games. ;)

I bought all the DLC British and French. For those that don't know there is even a German DLC which I have also. More DLC too please. Mobster DLC. Landmark DLC like Mount Rushmore, Sears tower, Twin towers (new and old), 7 wonders of the world etc. I could go on and on for DLC. LOL.

:)
I, too, am very appreciative of the gesture.

Thanks for what? The Sims 3 Katie Parry's Sweet treats. Is this list going to be limited to their least popular games? Wouldn't any game worth getting have already been bought by the people who have bought this game? Oh I can't wait to download The Sims 2 so I can delete my disc download (this is sarcasm not directed at you)?!?! Will I be able to get another simcity to download for free? This also seems to cause another problem to me. If everyone (or 2/3) of the people who like simcity all like the same game, then download that game, would that in fact cause the same problem causing this same "solution" for a free download, leading to the same problem/solution loop to where every game ea has made become free?!?!?!

Thank you Lucy, that's kind of you :)

The best formula I have come across in my life. My knee pain just went off in few applications without any trouble. I have no more pain in my knee. I can now walk and even run without any problem. online sandhi sudha

And do you have a phone number? Maybe we can go out for dinner or something.

I cant take you to the Cassino in my new simcity town... oh wait, the traffic is stuck for about 2 hours and my citzens abandoned the city. ewww, just you and me baby, just u and me

I thought money cant buy you happiness?
but i would be more then happy bought if there was offline mode! :)

I agree with Zerolimitz. Who cares about another bad game that requires an active internet connection to play. How about adding an offline mode. What is the harm in being able to play offline. Are you so paranoid about theft that you cant allow the game to work offline?

I may in the minority but I was actually unaware that this game would require an active internet connection to play. I, and I am sure others, feel misled that its ONLY an online game. If that is the case, why the heck did you bother shipping discs? Could have saved that money and installed more servers from the get go. Come on, EA is a huge company and it's trip ups like this that can ruin your image.

Second!

Unfortunately, it's too little, too late for some of us. I've already requested a refund for this travesty of a launch. It's a shame too, SimCity is the reason I became a statistician in the first place, and I've been a fan since I first played this game on the SNES.

Then don't give up Lutranereis - I am having great success in the servers now and its a blast. As someone with as much passion about the game as you have, I'd hate to see you miss out on the awesomeness that is the new Sim City.

Yea I can get into the servers to ezMrcz BUT when I switch servers my city doesn't go with it. It is still in the first server I used. You know how many times I have had to go through the "Lets get started city" just to find my city! I do not feel like starting a new city right now when I have a "going good" city somewhere else, like on the first sever where everyone else has their city.

I have to agree that the launch was a disaster but the game really is amazing... SIMCITY was my first computer game when i was 6 years old, and i have owned everyone since then... there start ups have been horrible but that is EA not maxis... dont punish the game when it wasnt its fault give it a chance you WILL love it

Really? What's the stat on people in America not having the patience to wait a couple more days? #firstworldproblems

No kidding, right? I wasn't terribly bothered by the issues in the first place, because I have patience and my life didn't depend on this game launch, but to get a free game out of it is awesome. I was thinking how neat that was and then I scroll down and start reading comments and surprise, surprise. Nothing but complaints. If these server issues have really been this devastating to you then you have bigger issues to worry about.
