The SimCity beta is rapidly approaching and we know many of you have tons of questions. Fortunately, we have the answers. Below you’ll find the FAQ for the SimCity closed beta:

Q: How long does the beta run?
A: The beta is open from Friday January 25 9AM PST to Monday January 28 12:01AM PST.

Q: I want to be part of the beta, what can I do to get in?
A: Beta registrations are currently closed, and we are no longer accepting new applications.

Q: I registered for the beta, when will I receive my code?
A: If you are selected, you will receive an email containing your unique redemption code and instructions on how to participate in the beta. Emails will be sent throughout the day on Friday and into the weekend.

Q: What’s new in this SimCity?
A: SimCity delivers unprecedented depth of simulation with the new GlassBox Engine, where everything is simulated, from up to 100,000 individual Sims in a city, to every Kilowatt of power pulsing through a region of cities. The model-like world and detail of the simulation make this the most responsive and personal SimCity ever. This is also the most expansive city management game yet where multi-city gameplay across regions delivers a larger playing field. Play a single city or up to 16 cities at once each with different specializations, it’s your choice.

Multiplayer is also a first for the series, adding a new dimension to the game, as decisions impact both the city and the region, creating new ways to play by collaborating or competing to earn achievements. Finally, SimCity is a live service that simulates real-time updates and pushes them to players in the form of new challenges. Through this platform, Maxis is also able to provide a continuous stream of new gameplay features and content. Whether you play by yourself, with your friends or the rest of the world, SimCity introduces an infinite world of possibilities.

Q: What’s in the beta?
A: Here’s the answer straight from Lead Producer Kip Katsarelis: The Closed Beta is an important step for us as we approach our launch date for SimCity. We’ve crafted a one hour replayable experience that will let you enjoy the magic of the game and allow us to test critical features. Everyone will go through our “Getting Started Scenario”, which takes you through the basics of how to play the game and gives you a sneak peak at some late game content. After that, you’re free to start your own city and play for one hour. We’ve given you all the tools to build up a medium density city, given access to the Casino Big Business, all of the basic services, loads of public transportation options, and several options on how you can power your city. You can start up as many cities as you like during the 3 Day event. We encourage you to try to build different types of cities, explore the leaderboards and try to beat the Global Challenge! By putting these features through a rigorous test, you’re doing us a huge service. Your feedback will go directly to the Development Team and make an impact on future updates. By playing the game you’ll be testing our online servers, helping ensure a smooth launch.

Q: What languages does the beta support?
A: While the full game will support multiple languages, the beta is English only.

Q: Is there a Mac beta client?
A: No, this beta is exclusively for PC users.

^^First^^ Awesome update guys, I'm looking forward to next week!

You got lucky! hehe. I thought I was gonna be the first!

YES!!!!! i hope there are high buildings and high skyscrapers and i am sure i will give 2 thumbs up!

Woo (and missed first by a login lol)

I saw a poster about the launch date of SimCity when I was buying infant costumes for my kids, I tried to register for Beta but it was closed so the only thing I could do was to wait when SimCity will be available to buy. I don`t regret the money I`ve spent for this game, it is worthy.

Everyone on earth is going to pirate this. Convince me not to, EA.

so what, you think everyone is going to copy a ONE HOURE sneak peak, so everyone can play for 1 hour!?!? what a waste of time..............

Its a re-playable 1-hour. They only allow you to get 1 hour into the game. Then it will restart from the beginning. And you can do it for 3 days.

He's not talking about pirating the BETA, he's talking about pirating the game when it comes out. EA has a track record of milking as much money as they can from the consumers, if that's the reason for people pirating the their games, i don't know. But that is what he meant.

I agree, I suspect he's probably talking about the final release.

Based on what I can see, one of the key features of this Simcity is the multi-city/collaborative play functions. I'm betting EA will make sure that if you want to use those functions, you need to have a legit copy.

However what gets me is that he's essentially asking them to justify him not breaking the law. That's just a ludicrous thing to ask. I think anyone that pirates software needs to grow up. People work hard to make this software and we need to pay them for that work. I work in software and I need to eat and pay my rent. Therefore I expect the people who use the software my company makes to pay for it. This is a job and I need to get paid. Therefore I will be happy to pay EA for this game. It is clear they have done extensive work on it and they deserve to be paid for that work. If you're thinking of pirating this, then you need to grow up, in my opinion.

You mean besides the fact that you would need to write code for all the stuff that is handled server side, including the code to actually save your city. Anyone who thinks cracking this is going to be as simple as creating a code generator and getting past some DRM is going to be in for a rude awakening. Any cracked copy is likely to wind up with half of the stuff (particularly the intercity stuff) not working properly, if at all.

totaly agree

Because if you need to pirate something that costs $60 you'd be better off spending your time finding a job?

Go ahead, you need an account to play. Online only game dillweed.

Good luck finding someone who can run the glassbox simulation on a comupter without massive lag. That is a large reason it has to be online not just for drm but because the simulation is to such a large scale you need massive severs to run it.

i can:p

How about not being a scumbag? You know, by actually paying for a product you enjoy that was created by a lot of hardworking people. Poor sales can lead to a lot of talented employees with families being laid off. Not that expect a selfish person like yourself to care about anyone else.

If you don't like the game, don't play it. If you like it, buy it.

Update: After playing the closed beta, I decided to pre-order the game, then canceled after I posted constructive criticism and was banned from the beta.

yes its good

Awesome! I've been waiting a long time for this!!

Please invite me, I am beta tester veteran. I've tested many games for EA in fact. Definitely a great game that I would love to be a part in helping it be the best ever!

Thanks in advance!

I have never played beta before, and I hope for this to be a first for me, it would be an amazing new experience, but if does seem different than the normal, "If your lucky enough to get it you can play the game forever until the release." and is now "For 3 days, you can play on the beta." Ah, whatever, I'm pre-ordering the game for my birthday on the 28th, and this would be a nice thing to have for my birthday. :)

Ha this is so weird, My birthday is the same day as yours! I hope to also be in on the BETA, would be a cool birthday gift. I will too be pre-ordering SC on my birthday!

Cool! For both of us, getting beta is like a double present, a copy of Sim City and a chance to play it early!

Hello!
I have a question: If I pre-order the game, will I be able to download it on my Mac? In the checkout page, under platform it only says PC.

Could you forward the answer to my email?
Thanks.

Simcity 5 is not avalible for MAC

Of course it will be available for mac, but maybe it will be released a few days later.

I don't even own OS X or even used one, but I'm pretty sure there is something called boot-camp (it's probably called something else. I may have mixed up names) that lets you use Windows some how. Its really easy to search your OS X's programs just like on windows. Unless you hate windows so much that you don't use it at all, that's your only choice (that is free I guess) Apple even gives support with video tutorials on that website for boot-camp and I know cause I checked.

Also, WHY DO PEOPLE WANT MAC TO PLAY GAMES ON. IT's WORSE TO PLAY GAMES ON THAN NORMAL LINUX. Just saying. Windows is best for gaming which I realized while making sure years ago when I might have got a Mac. I find Windows much easier to use unless you have the old version of OS X 6 and before.

[The reason I said OS X is because you could have a Sony laptop with OS X on it or a Mac with Ubuntu on it.]

1 hour over 3 days doesn't seem very long, especially since you are only allowing a small group of Beta testers. No one can truly put the game through the ringer in 1 hour of game play. Seems like cutting corners to me, just so you can say you Beta tested it.

Agreed, I find that on SimCity 4 that takes me 1 hour just to get my road latouts figured out :/

Ditto. Who plays SimCity for 1 hour? Nobody.
But perhaps what they are looking for are glitches in the online technology within the 1 hour of gameplay. Not our actual pretty cities.

To me it seems like we can still make new cities and keep at it. I do agree though 1 hour isn't really enough to let us really go at it and test the game more thoroughly.

Yeah I don't think I'll be able to get even half of the beta experience in one hour.

You're gonna get "ALL" the "beta experience" in one hour. Actually that's OK for me; especially with being able to start new cities with each hour. It would be like a pre-acclamation period before the launch of the real deal. On May 5th we hit the grown runnin' with the "get acquainted stuff" done.

March 5, not May 5....

Can't wait!!!! Excitement is building!!! I want something that's gonna push the limits on my Alienware and I'm hoping this is it!!! :)

PLEAS PICK ME FOR Beta, my name is Josiah hall, greeting from phoenix Az. I am a huge fan of Sims game, i play that all my life. Very looking forward playing Sim city Beta :D

I had signed up for the beta some time ago and I have bought a new computer since then. Would I have to sign up for the beta again because of the new computer? I thought I saw somewhere on the forums that the dxdiag file isn't required anymore.

Excellent work guys... Now if I can get into this, I'll be sure to provide as much feedback as possible.

As for me, an hour actually is plenty of time to get a few things going... Of course, that depends on how easy it is to layout roads and rails, since I suspect that will take the longest time to do.

So can you play the one hor period as many times as you like and upgrade your city (cities) one hour at a time? Or do you only get to play for one hour inbetween the 3 day to 4 period during the beta? If someone responds Thank you so ever much.

What I can understand from the blog is that you get to play as many times as you want in the 3 days BUT each city only lives for one hour before its destroyed.

Joguei muito sim city 3000 e 4! No aguardo do 5!
