SimCity Update 2

Mar 09, 2013
Maxis SVP Lucy Bradshaw

I’ll keep this short since almost everyone who cares is busy building cities and making friends in SimCity.

Maxis continues to make huge progress in addressing the lag and server-capacity issues we experienced at launch. We’ve improved our server response time by 40x, we’ve doubled the number of players in the game at the same time and reduced server down times.

The situation is good, but not good enough. And since my boss is one of the negatively affected (!) - we’re still driving hard to get everyone online, playing together, and no hitches.

Tens of thousands of new players are logging in every day. For that support – that commitment from our fans -- we are deeply grateful. More than anything, we know that information is important to our players. Our Twitter chat today made that especially clear, and I want to say thank you sharing your ideas, your issues and for being, well, nicer than I thought you would be, given everything you’ve been through. Thank you.

The new servers we rolled out have a new faster set up. We are now dedicated to updating our original servers so that those of you who have been playing these past few days can get the benefits on servers where your cities are played. To do this, we will have to take the original servers down one by one to upgrade them. The improvements will be worth the downtime, and thanks for hanging with us as we do this. We’ll also be adding more tonight as well. We’ll be sending out detailed info shortly through our community forums and launcher.

That’s it for today. We’ll keep you updated on what’s to come. Expect the first of our server upgrades to start this evening.

OK. I have played for a time now, but I cannot share resources like Simoleans to other cities. Has this been disabled? I lose the Simoleans in one city, but do not get them in the other. Help.

Permalink Submitted by wanderer19940729 on Mar 09, 2013

maybe you'd like to think that the money is transferred via post, i.e. there's this imaginary money truck that's armed and going really slowly from your city to your other city. Perhaps this will contextualize and explain what is happening (of course, everybody knows that isn't happening.)

Permalink Submitted by AnimeGamer0 on Mar 09, 2013

Uh, actually there really IS a money truck that leaves from your town hall and travels via freeway to the other city. It's just that it's possible the money is lost if the truck never leaves the town hall or possibly gets perpetually stuck in your city or the other person's city. Or - perhaps the truck leaves to a city only to arrive to a city that has no town hall and thus the money is lost (or vice versa, trying to send money but not having a town hall - the money is lost but no truck anywhere leaves.)

You can track the truck by checking Region View -> Gift Simoleans and there should be a little avatar icon that stays over the money truck as it travels from your city to the other city (or vice versa.)

Permalink Submitted by SAPaleAle on Mar 09, 2013

I wont buy this game at all. I have a poor internet connection and with the draconian always online requirement of this game it would be a waste of money to buy. Great to see EA and Maxis discriminate against people who don't have access to a good connection. The fact that you have so poorly programmed this game that removing the online requirement is not an option pretty much explains why the launch is such a clusterf.

Permalink Submitted by sgohans3 on Mar 09, 2013

It's 2013, it's about time you get out of the Stone Age and upgrade your internet connection. It's too bad that you will not be enjoying this game as it's addicting as all hell, and I think you know this, that is why you keep telling yourself that it's a bad game. If it was so bad they wouldn't have to upgrade their servers as no one would be playing.

@ sgohans3, some people don't have the ability to access high speed internet, or as for some people I know, they have a very low end high speed internet connection that is very spotty and unreliable. This is by no means their fault, it's what is offered to them in the area they live in. Maybe you should think of these things before you flapping your lips and speaking gibberish, cause from where I'm sitting, all I see is a steady stream of drool coming from the corner of your mouth. So wipe off that chin and get that retarded look off your face.

Without selling a house and moving to different location the internet here isn't getting updated soon. Dont assume just because you can get your internet upgraded that it is option for everyone else. I will never know if it is a bad or a good game because it is pointless me. Now excuse me why I go back into my cave.

Maybe, then, you should stop playing games, get a job, and improve your situation, instead of asking others to do it for you, and complaining when it doesn't happen. It's a game. If you don't have the requirement, don't buy the game. How hard is that logic to comprehend?

I dissagree. On prinsiple i think it is wrong to demand an internettmconection just to play the game. They are basicaly forsing ann extra cost on the player, as a deasent internett costs a lot of money. And it'ss not guaranteed to work 100% of the time. Eiter the servers fail as we've seen, or the internett fails, be it power outs at the isp, or diggers somewhere diging up the cable by mistace.

Beeing 2013 is no excuse for having a good conection. Our fiber optic line fails all the time.

Permalink Submitted by Grrrrrene on Mar 10, 2013

I agree that a decent internet connection is almost a basic necessity of life, but it should not be a requirement for a game. I am going to an exhibition in Paris next week. I take my laptop with me, but I cannot play SimCity because I am not willing to pay € 10 a day for an internet connection. This whole forced online play is just stupid and everybody with a bit of intellect knows it is to combat piracy at the expense of paying customers.

Sgohans - in that case

Permalink Submitted by Writin_Reg on Mar 10, 2013

Sgohans - in that case everyone in Rural New England have to move as we are not offered any better. Only in a small number of actual towns in NH can one even have cable forms of internet - we are not offered anything here but dial up or satellite and I have satellite - but it is still not reliable enough for gaming for the fact every rainy or snowy or cloudy day the signal drops off with satellite, and that is during winter - the other 3 seasons of the year the trees getting leaves on them stoip my internet and local networks on tv completely. People are not going to sell their homes for a game. Get real. Most of the northern rural states across this country are the same way. We don't have monster cities - we have lots of rural areas where houses are miles apart and own a lot of really lovely land - which is healthy for people but not so good for depending on the internet.

The internet around the world itself is not good for any game requiring internet 24/7 and is total BS. I have all the previous Sim Cities ever made, but this one is a big - forget it!!!!

Poor form my friend. I can

Permalink Submitted by Orbiteye on Mar 10, 2013

Poor form my friend. I can only utilize the internet access available to me in rural PA and in many cases it is spotty at best. I have worked as a city planner and regional development consultant for over 12 years and I would like you to know that there significant regions that do not have any or adequate internet access. In some cases it is only available through people's cell phones due to recent government investment in broadband access in rural areas. Always on means that not everyone can even have access to the game and that a variety of operational issues end up impacting thousands of people such as: technical server problems, crowded servers, server maintenance, server hacks, and so on. Hell, even sun spots can cause down times. Simply give people what they paid for and everyone would only have to worry about their own computer issues. Even email viruses, such as those experienced in Diablo 3, have caused people to be locked out of the game. If they could just own their product they could play endlessly despite email issues. The whole thing is extremely poorly thought out and continues to emphasize the arrogance and sense of superiority many software, and tech companies in general, have towards the consumer. I know this may come as a shock but we warned them of this and we actually know what we are talking about.

All of the simulation

Permalink Submitted by seedysanchez on Mar 10, 2013

All of the simulation processing is done server side so I'm guessing it's not a 'simple fix' to re-program it all to run offline, added to that is the fact that if they did make it offline, the minimum required PC specs would bump up considerably meaning that a large portion of people that bought the game would probably be unable to play it anyway. It's a shame that it has to be played online but their failings are in design and estimating the server capacity needed, not in their programming. It's also fair to point out that traditionally games were often designed for upper end hardware -even if it meant that some gamers would have to patiently wait years to be able to play the game.

You treated us well! Limo, hotel, food, etc. I know first hand that the people @ Maxis are awesome and really do care about the gamer. I am happy with the pace of fixing the game and have been having a great time since it got stable.

Online is working in my favor for easy access to saves and sharing with my girlfriend.

With that said it has to go offline down the road to preserve the game when the service "ends." This isn't an mmo so I think that is a realistic expectation.

You've got to do something

Permalink Submitted by abelmj on Mar 09, 2013

You've got to do something about the constant internet connection requirement. Those of us in parts of the country where connectivity is spotty will suffer alot. If you must have intenet based DRM, could you at least make is so it does not have to be constant/uniterupted? Check once the user fires up the game if all you want to do is play solo. I like the idea of multiplayer, but not always. I like to play games sitting on the patio some days and there is no Internet out side (I do not have WiFi). Surely, you can come up with a solution to this.

I'm not sure if you have seen the Twitter conversation she had with us fans today but she explained that an "offline" mode will most likely never happen because the game itself gets all the simulation data needed from the server. It looks like some people will just have to stick to SimCity 4: Rush Hour.

Dear Ms Bradshaw,

Permalink Submitted by Canuckasaurus on Mar 09, 2013

Dear Ms Bradshaw,

I bought SimCity on the day it was released, expecting a fully-functional game. Instead, I had to wait four days in order to be able to play it sometimes. I say sometimes because I can't get logged onto the game every time I want to play it, and I'm frequently disconnected during play. I understand you are working on these problems and have made great progress since last Tuesday, and I appreciate the effort to make things right with your customers by throwing them a bone; but do you want to know what would really have nipped all this anger I and others who purchased SimCity felt? One word: Sorry.

Would it kill your company to have someone say that? It would go a long way towards healing this rift between company and consumer, and quite frankly, until it is said, I don't believe anyone from Maxis or EA when they say they care.

Thanks for listening.

Show me a post where the word "sorry" appears. I've been all over the Internet on this thing, so if such a post exists, give me a link. There's a big difference between I accept responsibility and I'm sorry. The latter show contrition, the former does not. And considering their customer relations attitude (ie no refunds and we will ban your account), a little contrition is in order.

If your game is SO good as is mentioned in every "Apology" then have the guts to change the Origin policy and allow refunds for people that purchased during a certain window. A game that good will prevent people from asking for a refund and since it's has always on DRM you should be able to easily disable the consumers game.

Not even a lengthy drawn out one, but even just a "sorry" would show us that you know the extent of the mindblowing debauchery that you unleashed this past week, as well as the anger, frustration, and disappointment that you instilled in your most loyal fans.

Looking forward to the rest of the game being fulfilled over the next couple of weeks (and, I'm guessing the billion DLC's/expansions to come.)

Big Ben, The Empire State building, the Arc De Triumph* and 5 casinos are now completely empty and I started hemorraging money. Is there some sort of issue with tourists arriving in cities, or have I honestly messed up somewhere. But only having 5 people a day in the Empire state building seems odd.

Best way to make it up to us: maintain a website where users can submit ideas for gameplay improvements and let us vote up the best ones. Making us feel like we and our opinions matter will go a long way in this healing process.

If they did something like remove the always-online policy, I would feel much better about how much money I dropped on this game, considering I bought all of the DLC. If you just get rid of the dumb policy causing problems, you won't have to expand servers, or make every player stop playing when you want to shut down the servers. I don't care about having my save file on your cloud, I want it on my hard drive. At least make it an option, so players can still play this game in three years' time.
