A SimCity Update...And Something For Your Trouble
Here’s a quick update on the problems we were experiencing with SimCity – and a little something extra for people who bought the game.
The server issues which began at launch have improved significantly as we added more capacity. But some people are still experiencing response and stability problems that we’re working fast to address.
So what went wrong? The short answer is: a lot more people logged on than we expected. More people played and played in ways we never saw in the beta.
OK, we agree, that was dumb, but we are committed to fixing it. In the last 48 hours we increased server capacity by 120 percent. It’s working – the number of people who have gotten in and built cities has improved dramatically. The number of disrupted experiences has dropped by roughly 80 percent.
So we’re close to fixed, but not quite there. I’m hoping to post another update this weekend to let everyone know that the launch issues are behind us.
Something Special for Your Trouble
The good news is that SimCity is a solid hit in all major markets. The consensus among critics and players is that this is fundamentally a great game. But this SimCity is made to be played online, and if you can’t get a stable connection, you’re NOT having a good experience. So we’re not going to rest until we’ve fixed the remaining server issues.
And to get us back in your good graces, we’re going to offer you a free PC download game from the EA portfolio. On March 18, SimCity players who have activated their game will receive an email telling them how to redeem their free game.
I know that’s a little contrived – kind of like buying a present for a friend after you did something crummy. But we feel bad about what happened. We’re hoping you won’t stay mad and that we’ll be friends again when SimCity is running at 100 percent.
SimCity is a GREAT game and the people who made it are incredibly proud. Hang in there – we’ll be providing more updates throughout the weekend.

I don't want another EA game.
I don't want another EA game. Please give me money so I can buy games from Steam, where translation from english to portuguese actually makes sense so I dont have to read some new kind of hebrew-portuguese to painfully go through an unclear purchasing process.
Thx.
Why don't you just use
Why don't you just use English like normal people?
Not everyone in the world
Not everyone in the world speaks English......(facepalm)
seems like he can type in
seems like he can type in English well enough tho
LOL, He seems to type it
LOL, He seems to type it better than 95% of youtube users.
So, think like this:
So, think like this:
If you are American/English, playing a game originally made in russian, with a poor english translation althought you can understand russian pretty well withouth mastering it.
Would you rather play in a poor english translation or in russian?
And stop being a douche.
"English like normal people"

I'm incredibly grateful for
I'm incredibly grateful for this response from you, but I really don't think it is necessary to have to feel so bad for everything that happens. Sue I was upset like everyone else, but it was the only reason I'm upset. Some minor bugs that irk me, but you can only get to much info out of the brief beta you provided.
As for the free EA game, that's far too nice of a thing to offer. We weren't locked entirely out of the game and I feel it may be fueling the elitist deserving ego a lot of players have anymore. I simple extra DLC would have been nice, or just a fun addon of sorts.
I know this sounded more like a bash, but I as a mature gamer, feel sorry that you have to feel so bad.
Regards,
Maybe you have been able to
Maybe you have been able to play from the start, but that doesn't go for everyone.
I had the game on release date, and I couldn't play for 2 days. Not counting the tutorial which I could (barely) play the second day. Now, after two days of depression I can finally play, altho still with connection issues, but at least I can get in eventually and continue with my city.
But I agree, a free EA game is nice, but not entirely neccessary. A reward in the form of free DLC would be a better idea.
I'm looking forward to the British City Set, but I don't want to pay 10 bucks for it.
So, Origin...? ;)
Kind regards,
Paul
I agree, I would much rather
I agree, I would much rather have a free DLC for Sim City, then some game I have no interest in. Its a nice attempt, but something Sim City related would of been so much better.
You have to understand that a
You have to understand that a good chunk of people already paid for the DLC, maybe adding as an option, but not just the DLC..
Yeah. That would do me no
Yeah. That would do me no good as I paid for all the DLC by preordering the top end package. I agree. I don't want a free game. I want some kind of special DLC. It would be nice, that everyone currently playing it, got a special landmark or building set that you could only get if you were effected by this stupidity. As of this minute, everyone who has paid for the game would be eligible.
And the business reality is
And the business reality is the free game will most likely be something 12-24 months old, which people aren't too likely to buy now. Whereas people will still buy the DLC.
And that's fine. It's still a good gesture.
Maybe a DLC that gives more
Maybe a DLC that gives more transportation options (In city Highways), Bigger cities, and other bits and pieces? :D
Who knows you might still be
Who knows you might still be able too, it is technically an EA title
you can buy all 3 for 20
you can buy all 3 for 20 bucks I did. It was called deluxe upgrade in the store. :)
If you are "depressed"
If you are "depressed" because you had to wait two more days to play your game, you've got issues far beyond what a free game will address. You should all stop whining and be grateful for the fact that EA put a significant amount of effort into what turns out to be a fantastic sequel to a GREAT franchise.
I agree, a DLC would be a
I agree, a DLC would be a nice gesture, but when ehy say a game from the EA portfolio do they mean any game?
When you have a game as
When you have a game as popular as SimCity, you do not have "brief betas." You stress test the life out of it and figure out the majority of the basic issues like server stability. While I agree that a free game (it could just be some small $20 thing) is a bit much in terms of a make-up present, something should of been handed back to us as to show they understand they messed up largely. This game has been pulled from major sellers due to their server instability. It is a huge deal to have an online-only game be constantly down and constantly erase progress during the start.
Honestly, I spent hours
Honestly, I spent hours trying to log in only to get the message that the servers went down, and right back up again. Repeatedly. Im sure they are appreciative of your lack of anger. But as for me. I think the game idea is great, or even DLC like you suggested. Either way I was getting a bit upset that I couldnt even play the game.
I still haven't even been
I still haven't even been able to get the game to open because it "can't connect to the EA servers." It has been 5 days and I still haven't been able to get any technical support. There is something fundamentally wrong with purchasing something, it not working at all, and not being able to get support.
How can you say EA giving us
How can you say EA giving us a free game enforces an elitist attitude. As a gamer we should be able to play the games we spend our money on. I understand that there will always be some problems with new releases and that's fine but what happened with Sim City is unacceptable and as gamers we should hold EA and another companies accountable. We are not elitists who think we deserve everything but we are consumers who should demand a quality product. A free game is a great gesture to show us that they understand they messed up and hopefully will be a reason to make sure something like this never happens again.
Ummm, you were lucky that you
Ummm, you were lucky that you were able to play right away. Many of us, including me, were not even able to log in for even a second all week.
I agree. DLC or even possible
I agree. DLC or even possible The MAC version would be nice for those that purchased the PC version. This is technology people. Its not like they did not test the game, because they did. I was there during Beta Testing and the game ran smooth. Plain in simple which was bad on their side not to think SIMCITY would not be as big as it would be. I have seen plenty of companies put out really buggy software and just run. MAXIS/EA is fixing the problem and admitting to this problem. When all is all. We gonna have tons of mayors to play with. Stop griping and grabs some patience. Thanks MAXIS/EA for a wonderful game, been enjoying your sim games since the 80s. I will admit I was disappointed when it was not offered as a PC/MAC like I am used to with your games. ;)
I bought all the DLC British
I bought all the DLC British and French. For those that don't know there is even a German DLC which I have also. More DLC too please. Mobster DLC. Landmark DLC like Mount Rushmore, Sears tower, Twin towers (new and old), 7 wonders of the world etc. I could go on and on for DLC. LOL.
:)
:)
I, too, am very appreciative of the gesture.
Thanks for what? The Sims 3
Thanks for what? The Sims 3 Katie Parry's Sweet treats. Is this list going to be limited to their least popular games? Wouldn't any game worth getting have already been bought by the people who have bought this game? Oh I can't wait to download The Sims 2 so I can delete my disc download (this is sarcasm not directed at you)?!?! Will I be able to get another simcity to download for free? This also seems to cause another problem to me. If everyone (or 2/3) of the people who like simcity all like the same game, then download that game, would that in fact cause the same problem causing this same "solution" for a free download, leading to the same problem/solution loop to where every game ea has made become free?!?!?!
Thank you Lucy, that's kind

I cant take you to the Cassino in my new simcity town... oh wait, the traffic is stuck for about 2 hours and my citzens abandoned the city. ewww, just you and me baby, just u and me
I thought money cant buy you
I thought money cant buy you happiness?
but i would be more then happy bought if there was offline mode! :)
I agree with Zerolimitz. Who
I agree with Zerolimitz. Who cares about another bad game that requires an active internet connection to play. How about adding an offline mode. What is the harm in being able to play offline. Are you so paranoid about theft that you cant allow the game to work offline?
I may in the minority but I was actually unaware that this game would require an active internet connection to play. I, and I am sure others, feel misled that its ONLY an online game. If that is the case, why the heck did you bother shipping discs? Could have saved that money and installed more servers from the get go. Come on, EA is a huge company and it's trip ups like this that can ruin your image.
Second!
Second!
Unfortunately, it's too
Unfortunately, it's too little, too late for some of us. I've already requested a refund for this travesty of a launch. It's a shame too, SimCity is the reason I became a statistician in the first place, and I've been a fan since I first played this game on the SNES.
Then don't give up
Then don't give up Lutranereis - I am having great success in the servers now and its a blast. As someone with as much passion about the game as you have, I'd hate to see you miss out on the awesomeness that is the new Sim City.
Yea I can get into the
Yea I can get into the servers to ezMrcz BUT when I switch servers my city doesn't go with it. It is still in the first server I used. You know how many times I have had to go through the "Lets get started city" just to find my city! I do not feel like starting a new city right now when I have a "going good" city somewhere else, like on the first sever where everyone else has their city.
I have to agree that the
I have to agree that the launch was a disaster but the game really is amazing... SIMCITY was my first computer game when i was 6 years old, and i have owned everyone since then... there start ups have been horrible but that is EA not maxis... dont punish the game when it wasnt its fault give it a chance you WILL love it

Really? What's the stat on
Really? What's the stat on people in America not having the patience to wait a couple more days? #firstworldproblems
No kidding, right? I wasn't
No kidding, right? I wasn't terribly bothered by the issues in the first place, because I have patience and my life didn't depend on this game launch, but to get a free game out of it is awesome. I was thinking how neat that was and then I scroll down and start reading comments and surprise, surprise. Nothing but complaints. If these server issues have really been this devastating to you then you have bigger issues to worry about.
Yea, no thanks. I'll take a
Yea, no thanks. I'll take a refund and then I'm done with EA. The broken promises and ignoring the community does not sit well with me. It's a shame, SimCity was such a great franchise and you have ruined it.
I don't want another game
I don't want another game from this garbage company. I want free DLC and offline play for the game already in my possession.
Let me, please, inject a
Let me, please, inject a little reality into your world, Ms Bradshaw:
"I know that’s a little contrived – kind of like buying a present for a friend after you did something crummy. But we feel bad about what happened. We’re hoping you won’t stay mad and that we’ll be friends again when SimCity is running at 100 percent." A little contrived? "Here, I just fucked your husband, take this nice watch, sorry." is what this is.
I don't want an EA game. You're offering to make me pay for one quarter-pound-shit burger, and then give me a small shit burger free. What you've missed? It's all a shit burger. You wanna make this up to us? Give us offline mode so we don't have to deal with your inbred "techs" trying to build up an actual working server network from scratch. Ya know, the cockgoblins that put down two servers a region for a game that ONLY plays online when according to you: "The good news (for our wallets) is that SimCity is a solid hit in all major markets." Really? Then maybe you want people to play the products they purchased from you? EA is gaining a solid reputation as the McDonalds of gaming. A Quarter Pound of Pure Shit per game plus Fries (i.e. bugs and constant problems) with every release.
Allow me to reiterate what I said to dear "Kip" after his attempt to kiss my customer ass:
"
Message from Senior Producer Kip Katsarelis
This has been an exciting and challenging week for the team here at Maxis, the culmination years of planning and development. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and enthusiasm from our fans which has made it even more upsetting for us that technical issues have become more prominent in the last 24 hours. We are hitting a number of problems with our server architecture which has seen players encountering bugs and long wait times to enter servers. This is, obviously, not the situation we wanted for our launch week and we want you to know that we are putting everything we have at resolving these issues.
What we are doing is deploying more servers over the coming two days which will alleviate many of the ongoing issues. We are also paying close attention to all the bug reports we are receiving from our fans. We’ve already pushed several updates in the last few days. Our live ops team is working 24/7 to resolve issues and ensure that bug fixes roll into the game as quickly as possible.
While the ongoing issues are troubling, we can also see that players are really enjoying the game. In a single 24 hour period, there were more than 38 million buildings plopped down, nearly 7 and a half million kilometers of roads laid down, 18+ million fires started and (my favorite fact) over 40 million pipes filled up with poop.
This team has put everything into this game and won’t stop until things are smooth. We ask our fans to be patient as our team works diligently to fix the issues. We share your passion for SimCity and thank you for your support and understanding.
Really? Why would you tell me how many things happened in the only time-frame that you guys didn't fark up this game as if that'll make me go "oh, gee, that's swell, they must be working Really hard to fix my....pipe of poop?!" Are you braindamaged? Do you want me to fly out and tighten your godforsaken helmet for you?
Honestly, this is just like EA's stunning launch of SimCity Societies. You remember, the game that took more than a week to patch so we could actually play the game, instead of getting error messages at launch?
All our anger aside, let's look at the hard facts. EA has had "...years of planning and development..." (a direct quote from above, from their senior producer...Kip...) to get this right. You knew your entire game was going to be online; you're neither the first nor the last to need servers, so maybe you should've over-prepared and given more than two server sets a region? Better to pay for the things now and they're in place than rush them into integration later at twice the cost (installation, integration, troubleshooting, and all that takes people and money - especially post-launch in a feeble rush to trick people into buying your product by saying "just a hiccup, we're on it.". Did you though? No. No you didn't even think ahead that Maybe people would be eager for this game (I'll tell ya I lost that eagerness after the first few hours I played before the servers crashed and never fixed themselves) or that there could be more sales than projected. And even if you considered that, the hells did you do about it? Squat. Or, to be more frank, you rolled on the floor in glee at the money you'd make selling people a broken toy like some carnival vendor with missing teeth, an ugly leer at our sister, and the stink of cheap whiskey on your breath. Incase you didn't notice, "our sister" refers to "our money".
Could things have been done differently? Certainly. The ability to have an offline mode, for one, would've been fantastic - especially given all the concern about lack thereof, and how many people just honestly don't want to play online - can't imagine why though, it's so je-jo-jo-j-.........server not found, cannot complete thought, please try again later.
Do I blame the developers? Certainly. You knew this was a bad idea from moment 1. All you had to do was browse Youtube (not to find bad ideas...though that'll be unavoidable on Youtube) and look at the sheer size and scope of some cities people had crafted with Simcity 4 deluxe edition. They're gi-freakin-normous. What the hell made any of you think we'd want small little cities? We want metropolises, carved out of mountains and floating upon coastal waves of blue bliss. I want self-contained urban jungles. And if I feel like expanding beyond that, then I'll hop on a server and play with other people to collaborate on epic regional adventures. But don't tell me a game that I paid nearly $86 (Canadian) for does not work because you don't have the sense to see a bad idea when it stares at you from the board meeting table and projector screen.
Do I blame the programmers? Oh man, I'd slap you idiots with my junk so hard I'd never be able to orgasm again! Why? Because you're in charge of making this thing work! So even if you get told "Make live this castle of crap that shall reap unto us a month of profits before no one touches us with a ten foot pole again!" you should have the brains to A) quit and work for a better company, B) Stand up and say "no way, we'll lose our reputation (HA! Oh man I laugh everytime I think of 'reputation' and 'EA' together) and what little profit we can make from the gaming industry now that people despise us like the mutant offspring of Snookie and Justin Beiber!" and try and explain to them what a real Sim game should be, or C) take what you're given and make it not suck. You failed all three; and, point of interest - you made this thing INTO the goddamn mutant offspring of Snookie and Beiber! Were you part of my company or software team, you'd find yourselves a pink slip and a one year subscription to the jam of the month club - the last one being so you can taste your bittersweet failure every month.
Who's left? Ah of course, the creator of this monster made of tentacle-* from a bad fanboy hentai slash flick. What kind of brain damaged, mentally degraded, money grubbing, jerkoff pulls a sphincter-puckering maneuver like this to not only the fans of this game, but his or her bloody customer base?! Ya wanna know what kind? The same genital-goblin that made Atari's ET. Remember that game, boys and girls? The one that created the famous Atari Landfill, and ruined Atari for years? You'll notice Atari doesn't have a console anymore; should EA be allowed to make games, then, after the same constant set of mind-churning actions? Ya know, Kip, what's filling our pipes with poop at the moment? The gut-damaging frustration of EA's constant patronizing actions after each one of its boneheaded, ignorant, downright jack-arsed moves it makes: you guys make a game out of grade F plague-rat meat, churn it through the marketing meatgrinder with just a hint of lame horse so we think "hmm, maybe this won't be quite the garbage as the last product", sprinkle it with a little golden glitter, wrap it in a huge bow (this being the reviews you've paid most magazines like Electronic Gaming Monthly to give about your dead rat burger) and then, when we realize you've given us the plague and we want something done about it (like a cure, and our money the hell back), you quote Donald F-ing Trump at us "It's not personal, it's business."
Guess what? Businesses go bankrupt all the time. It happens Really quickly when you sell us a turd, call it a steak, and we get our money back because we got sick. Of You."
Do I feel differently after yet Another day of being able to play my game long enough to fill one of those Amazing! 40+ million pipes of shit? No. This game should be refunded to everyone, repaired, given an on and offline mode, and given back to the players as only the digital deluxe edition for those that have bought the game already. For Free.

A giant text wall of nonsense
A giant text wall of nonsense...
Ha ha ha, funny as hell,
Ha ha ha, funny as hell, mainly because it's an accurate venting of our frustration over both avoidable problems and the history of IGNORING the user community for why we WERE faithful and loyal consumers. EA screwed us AGAIN and finally for me, the last time. The tiny cities INTENTIONALLY small so the user CAN'T do everything (WTF), the spastic and highly unrealistic fires, traffic, sewage while FORCING us online. HATE this version, complete waste of time.
How to fix it? They can't simple for sure. Their code is probably explicitly written to leverage a server architecture and multiple cities. They COULD remove the logic that makes the fires, sewage, water, traffic, etc from being so stupid and just an unrealistic irritant/city & lpayability killer. The could ALSO make the cities at LEAST 10x wider and longer. Finally providimg all this as a stand alone install... NOW you would have a hit! ...oh wait.... That's what Cities XL is TRYING to do already (though buggy as Hell I hear)
Till then... Time to wait to get CC statement to file a disrupt over fraud.
Only do that if you don't
Only do that if you don't mind kissing bye bye to your origin account. Like Valve and every other digital distributor they have a clause saying if you do a charge back you'll lose your account. Which is perfectly fine IMO, since doing a charge back is basically saying to the company you want nothing more to do with them
Gotta wonder if that clause
Gotta wonder if that clause has actually been tested in any courts yet. I can't speak to it's actual legality (not an IP professional) but I'd be interested in seeing how that would pan out. I'm pretty sure that in some jurisdictions with strong consumer protection laws, EA and Valve would be in for an unpleasant surprise.
