Cool Looking City: Residential Robot
Stop right there -- this is the city you’re looking for. Well, if you’re searching for the best representation of just how clever you can get with SimCity’s newly-added curvy road tool, that is! Audio Engineer Dave Driggers used this feature to prove that creating cities with windy roads opens up the opportunity to take your creativity to far, far away places, as evidenced by his city inspired by everyone’s favorite little companion ’bot. When Dave isn’t manipulating roads to resemble famous robots, he works on integrating the sound systems into the game as well as implementing audio-related gameplay features.
Dave’s fully functional design is just one of the many cool looking cities that the architectural artists here at Maxis have been whipping up recently thanks to weekly contests hosted by the design team. These weekly challenges encourage the team to play the game and have fun with it. Yes, folks – we do sometimes get paid to play games. We’ll be revealing more information about these contests in future blog entries, but for now, let’s learn a little more about how Dave assembled his robot-themed town.
Community Manager Michael Donahoe: What was the inspiration for building this city?
Audio Engineer Dave Driggers: I’ve always been a fan of sci-fi movies. And I’ve had this little toy robot forever, which inspired it. But it came about because one of our designers, Chris Schmidt, held a contest asking everyone in the studio to create something cool, and that’s how I ended up submitting this.
But I actually wasn’t planning to make it. I was just playing with the road tool and I was like, “I wonder if this would look cool here.” And then after a few hours I got sucked into the design and was having fun with it. It’s really easy to get distracted by just playing the game. Then I realized, “Oh, wait – I have real work to do!” [laughs]
MD: Did you have any trouble making this a fully functional city?
DD: No. There was plenty of space to put what I needed. And nothing about the shape or design of the city conflicted with functionality in any way.
MD: So are you saying that if we can find some open land somewhere, we could build a real-life representation of this city right now?
DD: Could? Yes. Should? Hell yes.
MD: We need to talk to some architects!
DD: I have a friend that’s an architect. We just need to come up with a lot of money.
MD: A lot of money. And a lot of space… We’re screwed.
DD: I’d settle for a robot house.
MD: Me too! So I noticed that you strategically placed a factory to represent the robot’s eye. Tell us about that.
DD: Definitely. So I saw that model of our oil refinery looked a lot like the panel that sits next to the robot’s eye, so it worked out really well.
MD: What’s next for you?
DD: Good question! The tools continue to progress, so I’m always looking forward to creating new things.

Curvy roads might be a nice
Curvy roads might be a nice addition, but to me lack of grid means one thing - lots of space wasted, and hard time putting the roads so that I can fit what I want and where I want. It's not really a problem when location of buildings doesn't matter that much, but it does in SimCity. You need to place proper building in key location so that they have adequate coverage. Imagine replacing buildings in an existing city, when you can't place police station because you lack half a meter. And then you have to demolish half a block to squeeze buildings in more efficiently to make more space. This, or demolish one more building to make space and have rest of it being unused.
Now, if buildings could dynamically adapt their plots to available space then it would be something

Yes... that's the reason why I like Cities XL 2012 !!! In Cities XL, we can build curvy roads and when we place parks or zones, they automatically get the size of the «Square» and the game builds trees between buildings...
Take a look at this (Music is from Simcity 4, but it's Cities XL) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Std9VwmDE-M
This tool helps to customize our city and make it more beautiful...
That's not exactly what I
That's not exactly what I meant. In Cities XL building sizes don't change. It's just free space leftovers that have their texture changed to pavement or park. For example, if you are only missing 0.5 meter in witdth, but have extra 1 meter in length you still won't be able to plop the building. I would like the building to resize itself slightly to fit this changed space, and possibly become slightly smaller / larger to some extent - like 10% margin
Ok, now I understand... did
Ok, now I understand... did you play Simcity Creator (Wii) ? The game has exactly the same problem...
I'd like to know... will we

Finally, this blog let me comment!
While I was originally shocked at no terraforming, and always online - I trust you, Maxis. I am adoring the graphics - just hoping there is enough space and also hoping there wont be as many gaps in between homes. But it's looking awesome!
Even though people are complaining because of features they wanted etc, remember guys things can come in updates. Ocean Quigley said on Twitter about being able to place transporation connections where we want could happen.. he said " out of question for ship. maybe later". So you know - things will probably change, and only SimCity 4 had proper terraforming.
Can't wait for this, love the soundtrack, love the developers and how in-touch they are with us, love that it's online too. Make this awesome so you can spawn loads of SimCity games: and please, EA, don't go crazy with DLC buildings like with The Sims Store D:
Those "updates" were one of
Those "updates" were one of my bigger concerns. I would expect diluted version of Simcity 4 with many missing features, or reduced to their basics AND DLCs restoring those features to their SC4 state. It's foolish to expect that EA would provide any meaningful updates for free.
I wish I could still have the trust you do. But after Spore and seeing how Maxis relies on Sims it's hard. Hell, it's 10 years since they made SC4 - how can I expect they still can do good city building games?
I'm sure he turned off the
I'm sure he turned off the grid for the screenshot... the grid is ESSENTIAL, I don't think they removed it.
PS: we want more screenshots please!
Graphics are so smooth and
Graphics are so smooth and fine, that's good. Not that kind of Atmosphere I anticipated but this still looks cool. We'd like to see more "legit" screenshots :)
I kinda overcame the rage from the lack of terraforming and city size....still not happy with the online thingy. Cool game though, keep it up, I can't wait to see if this game can CHALLENGE Simcity 4 ;)
Hear that? That's the sound
Hear that? That's the sound of your entire fan-base canceling their pre-orders.
Hey Sim City fellas! Well, as
Hey Sim City fellas! Well, as a SC fan player, I must show my opinion. So, I think by now, at the creation stage, the curving tool must be improved to make the curves more smooth. I say, its too retangular at some parts, you can notice that. I hope there is news about that coming soon. Thanks for Maxis to brings us this awesome edition. Bye.
As much as I appreciate Maxis
As much as I appreciate Maxis being so forthcoming with the development process for SimCity, they seem to be really talking bout the "curvy" roads as if they are some anticipated feature that is supposed to drum up my excitement. I know SimCity has never had curved roads before, but CitiesXL has already done them. This isn't a new feature that is going to set SimCity apart from any competition. What I would like to see discussed is how zoning will work with curved roads. In CitiesXL, "zone" placement was implemented very poorly in CitiesXL (not really zones but individual building placement). I would like to see how zoning in a 3D environment will work with the infrastructure.
Good comment... Maxis only
Good comment... Maxis only speaks about curvy roads, but there are so many features that we would like to know !!! Maxis needs to beat Cities XL...
it looks like one of the
it looks like one of the towns from the Sims 3...
The map is not big enough to
The map is not big enough to build a city. You built an R2D2 town. The maps are too small. Curvy roads don't make up for everything you left out. I'm not buying.
There's less than 50
There's less than 50 buildings in that city. I would like to see a fully maxed out population cap city using every square inch of allowable space.
I think maxis meant that City
I think maxis meant that City sizes were actually SC4 "Smalls," not mediums. Notice this "small" SC4 city is about the same size as this SC5 City http://imgur.com/a/JY9F3#13.
This is a medium city Maxis, http://imgur.com/a/JY9F3#18
-It's 4x bigger than this picture.
The image isn't supposed to
The image isn't supposed to show the size of the map - in fact, you can't even see the boundaries so you can't really know how big the map is.
The purpose of the screenie was to show curvy roads and how you can use them to make custom-shaped neighbourhoods.
The map is 2048*2048 meters,
The map is 2048*2048 meters, the same as a medium city in SC4.
Looks more like a robot
Looks more like a robot village. Hardly big enough to accommodate a football match. Another example of Sim City getting dumbed down. Graphics are looking quite nice though. Besides from that.. not much else to say really.
All of you complaining over
All of you complaining over the size of cities, Maxis has said that they are still experimenting with the city-sizes. And it may haved been zoomed in so you wasn't able to see the complete city.
sorry meant the complete area
sorry meant the complete area of the city
I think that online playing
I think that online playing could be a great opportunity for players, but not like it’s developed for this game. I want to be able to build a supersize city with 10.000.000 of people in a supersize region with farms, lakes, mountains…
It’s so hard to think an oline playing with regions instead of cities? I mean, I have my region that I can handle as I want and I have neighbourhood regions, if my neighbour wants we can communicate and create a commercial net or even bad relationship (why not).
I think that like this can be functional and everyone could be happy, EA have the online and people have its own region.
Furthermore I thought about some kind of award if people reach some target, like Olympic Games (f.e. if the city has at least 5.000.000 and Sport structure and other stuff…), or Football world cup, or winter games or cultural prize…but I think that is a little too big. I would love a game like this.
To those of you complaining
To those of you complaining about people complaining. Complaining is useless when it is not constructive, but most of these people ARE giving constructive criticism. If they kept their mouths shut how can anyone know what they wanted. Maxis cannot say they did not hear the community.
As far as I can tell, looking
As far as I can tell, looking at the images shown, there will be Sim City 4 buildings, that's nice. Nevertheless, just out of curiosity: How many buildings in total are expected to this version?
omg, curvy roads, that's nice
omg, curvy roads, that's nice, but the game is still crap nonetheless. /:
Is that one of the cylons
Is that one of the cylons from Star Trek? Awesome!
No, that's R2D2 from Star
No, that's R2D2 from Star Wars. I think the factory as an eye wasn't convincing enough
Yeah I know, I just making
Yeah I know, I just making fun of Maxis a little for making this "Hai guise, I can drawed robot." post.
Who would i get in touch with
Who would i get in touch with to do beta testing. I have been a fan of simcity since the very beginning. I love it.
This is not a Maxis game.
This is not a Maxis game. This is an EA game. Maxis died a long time ago. I'm excited about it but given EA's history, I'm waiting until the reviews are in before I buy.
Curvy roads and simulating every single resident are both cool features. If the "city" pictured here is the actual map size, then it's way too small. Hopefully city sizes at release will be bigger. But maybe they won't and EA will sell us the large map pack DLC for 5 USD lol.
Curved roads look like a good
Curved roads look like a good feature, especially for circumventing hills, however, this city is very very small; i could pee across it. I would like to see a larger representation of something that is fully functional, representative of something a player might actually make.
Nice picture. Party on Garth!

I have always loved the
I have always loved the Simcity series and I don't have much to complain about with this new simcity. Although I do have two major problems with this new game. They are the textures and some of the buildings that i've seen in the previews and in the trailer. The textures just seem to me like they have no depth or realism in them and when I was watching the trailer i saw alot of perfectly smooth looking surfaces that seemed to resemble plastic. My only other criticism has to do with some of the skyscrapers that were shown in the gameplay trailer. Let's face it, not every skyscraper is the Chrystler Building. But aside from these issues the game sounds absolutely spectacular and I plan to be playing it for hours on end.
Hang on guys... I think we've
Hang on guys... I think we've missed something in the update here. Look at the houses. I mean look keenly. Not all of them have one, but most of the houses have gardens now.
Well that makes me feel a bit better. Up to now all the pictures of residential properties have been devoid of horticultural realism... something that made me feel uneasy. How can you have a city simulation where only buildings, vehicles, and people are simulated without giving them a realistic environment to simulate within?
Also, curvy roads? Wow. You know, people already modded SC4 to have curvy roads. Oh, and CitiesXL already did them back in '09. I will however be impressed if you have managed to make them well enough to prevent the usual graphical errors that seem inherent to the whole 'curved road meets a junction or suddenly stops being curvy' scenario... anyone who has played CitiesXL will know what I mean. 800ft wide crosswalks, and traffic lights marooned far, far away from their stop lines...
Also, surely we have reached a point where the simulator is advanced enough to manage not to block a driveway, or carpark entrance, or even ambulance port, with a lamp post. This is something that used to seriously piss me off especially when I had spent hours in Lot Editor making it so if a police station, clinic, and fire station were built together, they'd share a communal car park and then poof, both entrances to the car park have a lamp post blocking them. Gurr!
On the other hand, Porto —
On the other hand, Porto — Portugal's second largest city - is the gateway to the north of the country. Porto not only provided the nation with its name (from the city's Latin title, Portus Cale) but also that of the renowned fortified traditional local beverage. Porto is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its rich architectural heritage.Dissertation writing service UK | Essay Writing in the UK | Coursework Help | Buy Essay | University Essay
I am disappointed so far.
I am disappointed so far. First - we have this stupid "blur". I zoom in to see everything in detail - instead I see half of my screen blurred. And the "miniature" effect is great in photos, but when I play SC I'd like to see a city - not a miniature.
I'm also disappointed by rumors of online-only gameplay. What if I don't like online-only gameplay?
And I'm also (again) disappointed by small cities. It seems that maps (and I mean maps where I can place buildings, not some "regions") in SC5 will be smaller than in SC4. And I fing SC4 maps TOO SMALL. I want to build one huge city (not five small cities, but connected in a "region"). I know that new engines and graphics rather support beautiful and shiny, but small cities. And that's what I don't like. I'd be perfectly fine with SC4 graphics but optimised to play on GIGANTIC maps.

Same size as SC4's medium cities? Ah. was hoping for larger. You'll never run out of space in CitiesXL, for example.
