On Wednesday the first ever SimCity Challenge Event was held at Customs House, Sydney inside a custom built Glass Box! The event was hosted by Lucy and Beau of IGN and had visits throughout the day from Fitzy and Rabbit from Nova and Stacey Wren of Big Brother! The winning Mayors of our SimCity Facebook competition chose their Deputy Mayors and flew in to Sydney where they competed in a 6 hour game play challenge to have the highest population in the new SimCity. After being explained the rules and having an hour to strategise the night before, our teams entered the Glass Box at 8am to begin the challenge.
They would each have the same region with 3 cities and 1 Great Work! Every hour on the hour, our Mayors were pulled from the box for 10 minutes to design and build a bridge using Mega Bloks, the winner would receive an added 30,000 population to their total. During that 10 minutes, their cities were left running without their Mayors!
Here are our teams:
- A Team – Mayor Andrew & Deputy Mayor Josh
- B Team – Mayor Ben & Deputy Mayor Grazi
- Bravo – Mayor Alex & Deputy Mayor David
- Pocket Watch – Mayor George & Deputy Mayor Andrew
- Random Panda – Mayor Clint & Deputy Mayor Blair
- Spider Pig – Mayor Luke & Deputy Mayor Jessica
Although they started off as the underdog with Mayor Andrew not being very well, A Team Deputy Mayor Josh led them to a great start with a lead of over 90,000 after the first hour! As the day progressed it was looking like they would continue their lead with them speeding ahead, and then in a dramatic turn of events A Team decided to pause their game and exit the Glass Box with over 2 hours left to go, stating that their population was as high as they felt they would get and that if they played any longer they would start losing population! With a whopping 554,000 they were fairly confident that they were our winners for the day but continued to compete in the bridge building competition and checking on their city every so often. At the 5 hour mark, with A Team still ahead with a big lead, our teams went out for their final 10 minutes of bridge building time and then hurried in for their final 50 minutes of gameplay!
At the end of the 6 hours an air horn closed off the challenge and all of the teams exited the box to see who’s bridge was judged the best by Rabbit & Lucy! With an impressively high structure and blue blocks underneath the bridge to look like water, Team Bravo took out the prize of an extra 30,000 population! EA Representatives then handed the population results to Rabbit who discussed the controversial strategy of A Team exiting the Glass Box with so much time remaining, and although 554,000 is an impressive number, it was only good enough for second place!
With a massive population of over 700,000, SpiderPig’s Luke & Jessica took out top place! Luke then told us about how in the last hour they made every body count, including Zombies! A really awesome comeback with their region gaining over 300,000 population in under an hour, they were then whisked away in the SimCity Hummer to their Jet Boat ride through Sydney Harbour! They then went on to enjoy a Harbour Bridge climb that night and a helicopter ride through Sydney yesterday!
Thanks to all those that came down to the event and to all of our competitors! We had a really awesome group of people competing and everyone had a fantastic day!
