Maxis Studio New Year’s Resolutions
So long 2012! It’s 2013. And you know what that means? We’re still alive (take that, Mayans!). But more importantly, 2013 means we’re mere months from shipping SimCity to the masses. Before that happens, the Maxis Studio thought up some New Year’s resolutions they want to accomplish in 2013 (besides finishing the game, of course!).
We rounded up the team members we spoke to last week [insert link] to ask them what they want to accomplish this year. Let’s hear what they have to say as we count down the days until March 5th (63 days, in case you were wondering).
Graphics Engineer Xin Liu’s New Year’s Resolutions: Find time to actually play videogames again. Ironically, being a game developer means I have very little time to play any games since my time is spent developing, I’ve built up quite a huge backlog of games to play and that’s just on the PC.
Gameplay Designer Brian Bartram’s New Year’s Resolutions: My New Year’s resolution is to play SimCity with the community and learn how we can continue to expand it and make it better. All my prior shipped games were single-player and primarily offline, so I’m very excited to be involved in a “live” game after it launches. I’m looking forward to playing with the community and finding out how they use the tools we give them. Also, I will admit that I get voyeuristic joy from watching players when they don’t know I’m watching.
Producer Meghan McDowell’s New Year’s Resolutions: I’m looking forward to playing SimCity much more in the New Year. I’ve got a lot of different cities planned, but I really want to team up with Lead Designer Stone Librande and Associate Producer Kyle Dunham to play in a regional challenge against the dev test team. They are getting really good and someone needs to show them up in 2013! I’m also upgraded my computer this past Christmas, so I’ll be playing more games in 2013. I have a personal goal to go surfing more, too.
Tuning Designer Chris Schmidt’s New Year’s Resolutions: My New Year’s resolution is to get out and see more of the city. Having never been to San Francisco before coming out to work on SimCity, I know there is a lot I haven’t seen of this city, and as we prepare for release, I hope to find time to see all the landmarks, and visit all the sights. The city here is vibrant and amazing, but I feel like I have only scratched the surface of its culture and what it has to offer.
Lead Gameplay Scripter Guillaume Pierre’s New Year’s Resolutions: My resolution is to play the game more and build beautiful cities so I can share pictures of them.
Gameplay Engineer Richard Shemaka’s New Year’s Resolutions: To make data view in our game the best of its kind. There have been some really exciting things happening recently in the games space with info visualization (Batman: Arkham City’s detective vision comes to mind). Especially for the simulation masterminds that a game like SimCity attracts, info visualization has to absolutely shine and floor people. There’s still a fair bit of work to go, and my resolution is to do the best I can with the remaining time I’ve got left!
Game Designer Dan Kline’s New Year’s Resolutions: I’m looking forward to playing a region of SimCity with everyone in my family. It’s something we’ve never done before, and SimCity is the first game we’re all excited to try together. It’s a really special game.

Here is a link to the SimCity Reddit AMA, the link is uncensored and unedited by the SimCity marketing department.
There was a link to an edited version but that has been taken down. I commented previously with a link to the actual AMA but my comments have been removed.
It is very important to note that without being constantly online you will not be able to play SimCity. This is called DRM, this version in particular is what is known as "Aggressive DRM" - the worst kind of DRM.
You would think EA would have learn't from Blizzard's experience with Diablo 3, apparently not though.
Don't support DRM. Don't buy this game. EA Maxis is censoring the community - go to the forums and read peoples opinions.

1. The original AMAA link is being actively promoted by Maxis, in contradiction to your post.
2. Blizzard sold over 6.8 million copies of D3, despite it being always online.
3. If you do not like online games get off the internet and write your complaints in textedit.

This is a link to several hundred comments posted by many people who all say they will not buy the game. It is solely because that they will require a constant Internet connection to play the game, and not all of them have this privilege. Please, Maxis, if there is anything you can do to make the constant Internet connection OPTIONAL, and allow players to play offline, please do it. A lot of sales are being lost just because of this reason. They will likely choose to pirate the game instead of buying it legitimately. This DRM won't remove piracy -- on the contrary. It will increase it. These people love the way the game looks, and will definitely buy it if it could just be played offline as well as online. Just please make it an option. Don't encourage them to pirate this great game.
to be honest i am sick of
